Firing Stoneware Pottery
Back to Stoneware
The process of firing a kiln dates back to
man's earliest fascinations with fire. Something very primeval is at work
within us when we look into the kiln. Those first humans who baked a piece of
clay in a campfire and found, after cooling, that it had been transformed into a
hard durable material, for better or worse started us on the road to industrialization.
All of our technology stems from those first potters and their discoveries with
clay and fire.

This is the interior of our car kiln being loaded inside our shop. We then
roll it our through the garage door into the body of the kiln for firing.
Below is a close up of the loaded kiln.

This is the exterior of our car kiln prior to firing. We use propane gas as the fuel. It takes about 10 hours for the kiln to reach the final temperature of 2341 F. At this temperature the clay vitrifies and becomes the material stoneware.
